Can Glyphosate-Based Herbicides Contribute to Sustainable Agriculture?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) have become the leading agricultural used globally since development of genetically engineered herbicide-tolerant crops. This paper investigates whether GBHs are consistent with or supportive sustainable agriculture. Agricultural sustainability is defined by generally agreed upon goals: (1) promoting agroecology; (2) protecting soils and Earth’s natural resources; (3) biodiversity; (4) enhancing quality life health farmers, farm workers, society. Through an in-depth examination scholarly literature, explores scientific studies their applications in agriculture areas human health, non-tillage agriculture, soil quality, aquatic ecosystems beneficial, non-target species. Based on four goals listed above for sustainability, finds that not goals.

How Patent Information Can Contribute to Sustainable Development

Intellectual property rights are an important driver of innovation and productivity in the knowledge-based economy. In particular, intellectual property rights in the form of patents may also be a valuable source of technical and scientific information and ideas on how to address environmental and health and safety concerns associated with industrial activity. In the network age, many smalland ...

Can Genetically-Modified Cotton Contribute to Sustainable Development in Africa?

Genetically modified (GM) crops and sustainable development remain the foci of much media attention, especially given current concerns about a global food crisis. However, whilst the latter is embraced with enthusiasm by almost all groups GM crops generate very mixed views. Some countries have welcomed GM, but others, notably those in Europe, adopt a cautious stance. This paper aims to review t...

Impact of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides on the freshwater environment.

Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] is a broad spectrum, post emergent herbicide and is among the most widely used agricultural chemicals globally. Initially developed to control the growth of weed species in agriculture, this herbicide also plays an important role in both modern silviculture and domestic weed control. The creation of glyphosate tolerant crop species has significantly incr...

Intentional self-poisoning with glyphosate-containing herbicides.

Four cases of self-poisoning with 'Roundup' herbicide are described, one of them fatal. One of the survivors had a protracted hospital stay and considerable clinical and laboratory detail is presented. Serious self-poisoning is associated with massive gastrointestinal fluid loss and renal failure. The management of such cases and the role of surfactant toxicity are discussed.

Is it time to reassess current safety standards for glyphosate-based herbicides?

Use of glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) increased ∼100-fold from 1974 to 2014. Additional increases are expected due to widespread emergence of glyphosate-resistant weeds, increased application of GBHs, and preharvest uses of GBHs as desiccants. Current safety assessments rely heavily on studies conducted over 30 years ago. We have considered information on GBH use, exposures, mechanisms of a...
